La Carelia è una regione situata al confine tra Russia e Finlandia cui è associato il tragico ricordo di uno dei massacri più feroci della storia, quello perpetrato nel 1570 dalle orde russe di Ivan il terribile, durante il quale si stima che siano state uccise tra 700.000 e 1,5 milioni di persone. Un eccidio al quale seguì quello perpetrato da Stalin che, negli anni ’30 del “Grande Terrore”, fece della Carelia una terra di morte, costellata dai gulag nei quali scomparvero centinaia di migliaia di perseguitati politici. Prendendo spunto da questa ferita ancora aperta, il film di Duque indaga le tracce di una vita spirituale per mezzo di una famiglia cristiano-ortodossa che vive nei boschi della regione e ancora pratica antichi rituali religiosi, per arrivare alla vicenda di Yuri Dimitrev, giornalista e attivista dedito alla ricostruzione dei massacri stalinisti, arrestato dalla polizia russa nel giugno 2018. Un’opera sapiente che tesse svariati fili narrativi per comporre un mosaico sfaccettato della Carelia odierna, nel cui complesso presente riecheggia ancora un passato di indicibile violenza.

Karelia is a region located on the Russian-Finnish border, where the memory of one of the most ferocious massacres in history, perpetrated in 1570 by the Russian hordes of Ivan the Terrible, still resounds. During this mass murder, it is estimated that between 700,000 and 1.5 million people were killed. In this same region, during “the Great Terror” of the Thirties, Stalin made Karelia a land of death, studded with the gulags in which hundreds of thousands of victims of political persecution disappeared. Taking inspiration from this still open wound, the first part of Duque's film investigates the traces of a spiritual life observing a Christian Orthodox family living in Karelia's woods and still practicing ancient religious rituals. In the second part, it narrates the story of Yuri Dmitrev, a journalist and activist who devoted his life to the reconstruction of Stalin's massacres and was arrested by the Russian police in June 2018. A masterly work which weaves several narrative threads to produce a multifaceted mosaic of modern Karelia, where an extremely violent past still echoes in the complex present.
