Romain Rolland high school in Ivry-sur-Seine, a Paris suburb. Anaïs, Catia, Clément, Elia, Lisa, Hugo, Judith, Mélodie, Tessa are students, French teenagers, some of them first or second generation migrants. The filmmaker enters cautiously in this melting-pot of today’s French society – which mirrors what Europe will soon become. She listens to the boys and girls as they reveal themselves to the camera in a way that rarely happens in a film. Conversations, confidences, half-truths, tears, a crescendo of emotions that are shared with classmates, mostly focused on family matters and relationships with parents. Between a beginning and an end in which computer screens (or mobile phones) seem to dominate the scene, deeper concerns emerge: separations, cultural distances, work instability that complicates the relationship between students and their parents. Glimpses of dancing, wild climbing of the stairs and conversations compose a chorus of experiences that tell the tale of that particular feeling of being alone in facing life for the first time.
